RARE Antique 1920s-1930s Ambar by Mohamed Ennifar 0.5 oz Pure Parfum Tincture Tunisia Perfume Oil Ittar Czech Glass Bottle.

No Box.

Please see the photo for the actual fill level of the perfume. The perfume was hand blended and smells like it is a natural ambergris tincture which means that it does contain alcohol. It was most likely produced for the tourist trade in Tunisia. The bottle was made in Czechoslovakia and is a thin, fragile crystal, decorated with arabesques and floral motifs hand painted in gilt enamel. The bottle is acid etched with Mohamed Ennifar's name and address. The ground glass stopper is cut and faceted. The bottle sports a paper label with the perfume name handwritten. There is overall wear and discoloration to the paper label. The gilt decoration may show signs of wear on the glass. Some flea bites might be present around the mouth of the bottle.

This perfume nearly 100 years old and not as fresh as it once was. The perfume itself smells very strong. It can be used to make perfumes or to be worn as is by itself on the skin.

About 10%-20% of the glass inner surface towards the bottom of the bottle had a whitish residue, so I poured out whatever I could from the bottle (which seems to be the dark reddish brown, nearly black alcohol tincture itself) into another one in order to inspect the residue. This residue, which I discovered with stirring it with a cocktail stirrer was a tarry semi-solid mass of thickened oil, almost like a muddy sludge.

Once stirred very well, it was super thick, looked like molten milk chocolate and would not pour out of the bottle. I assume this is the natural ambergris oil from the tincture. In order to get it out, I poured some of the tincture back in the bottle and shook it well. It then poured very slowly from the bottle. It was a milk chocolate brown color as I poured it into the separate bottle. I let it sit for awhile, and the contents had seemed to slightly separate again, a deep brown layer and a milky chocolate colored layer. I believe the deep colored layer is the alcoholic tincture floating atop the ambergris concrete (looks to be about 30% or so of the entire amount). I believe there is a very high concentration of ambergris in this tincture.

The smell when the bottle is first opened is very strong and pungent, but to my nose, it is very pleasant and sweet. The perfume is very dark and can stain, there is some around the mouth of the bottle and it is very dark brown almost black, sticky, tar like. I just put a drop on my skin, and rubbed my two wrists together, the heat caused by the friction caused the perfume to bloom which smells sweet and softly balsamic, a few minutes later it reminds me of old paper or tobacco. Slightly woody, vanilla like and soft, like tonka bean. My five cats seem to be very attracted to this odor. This is nearly 100 years old and has aged and is very well rounded, absolutely not fecal. i do not smell any ozone or marine notes. Very rare ambergris perfume! Good luck trying to find aged ambergris this old online. Half ounce of this should be plenty to work with, as only a small amount would be needed in a recipe, diluted of course!

This is one of a series of antique perfume bottles I acquired from an estate, each will be listed separately. These bottle were custom made in Tunisia in the 1920s by Mohamed Ennifar. Mohamed Ennifar had a perfumery that dated back to the turn of the last century, I found him referenced in two books, I have copied the passages which mention him.

The Veil: A Romance of Tunis by Lady Ethel Stefana Drower, 1909:

"This is the Street of the Perfumers explained Gioconda. It is the most aristocratic part of the bazaars. The perfumers are Moors of Spanish descent and they are very proud. They say that some of them still keep the keys of their palaces at Granada and Cordova but I have never asked them if it is true. Most of them are so rich that they need never make another penny but they come still just because their fathers did I suppose. The shops were small and had but a single counter crowded with bottles of gilt and coloured glass bunches of tall candles and slender phials of perfume a foot or more long were suspended from above and jars of essences and oils filled the shelves on either side. Their owners reclined on the seats behind the counters idly conversing with their friends or customers. They were pale of complexion and dressed in rich materials of delicate hues aesthetic vendors of aesthetic wares. Gioconda paused before one of them, "I will introduce you to this man", she whispered. "Mohammed Enifar [sic] is an old friend of papa's." An elderly Arab behind the counter smiled and saluted them gravely. "All the friends of mademoiselle are my friends," he said signing to them to sit down. His manner was that of a prince entertaining honoured guests. He enquired after the health of Ciccio, Scarfi hoped that Riccardo would be favourably impressed with Tunis and was surprised to hear that he had not yet seen the fine new gardens of the Belvedere. The next moment an attendant who had obeyed a word from him on their approach, brought them two cups of thick sweet coffee. "Mademoiselle permit me," Mohammed Enifar was reaching down one of his slender phials and pouring out one two three precious drops into each cup. "Had monsieur come from Sicily? Was he staying long? Had he visited the Casino?" He begged that mademoiselle would allow him to perfume her handkerchief. Gioconda laughingly assented and so did Riccardo. He insisted that they should choose the essence which they preferred: ambergris, jasmine, attar of roses, musk, lentisk, rosemary, geranium, camphorwood, essence of the Bey, all the exquisite category of Oriental perfumes, and as they sipped their coffee they smelt at each the perfumer touching the palms of their hands with the glass stoppers until the air was rioting with strange heavy scents. When they had finished their perfumed coffee, Gioconda thanked him and took ceremonious leave. He uttered a soft sentence in Arabic but she smilingly shook her head and passed on."

A Book About the Two Africas by James Saxon Childers, 1941:

"The Arab trading quarter of Tunis is set apart from the rest of Tunis by walls, and by infinitely more than walls. One drives in a carriage to the gate of the trading quarter. There one leaves tire carriage and passes through the gate and into the souk, tire great marketplace like a bazaar of India. Here is a world completely Oriental. Here murder or marriage might just have happened and no man’s face would tell.

The streets are narrow and twisty; they are dim because each street is covered over, is vaulted like an arcade. One street is filled with the shops of the silversmiths. In the next, the tailors ply their needles. Then the shoemakers fashion yellow slippers for men, red slippers for women. They embroider them with blue thread and threads of gold. Beyond is the street of the dealers in rugs and leather, in silks and damasks and embroideries.

The most fascinating of all the streets is the Souk-el-Attarine, the Street of the Perfumers. As I walked there, I felt that my nose was as large as Cyrano’s and, like him, I inhaled all April. Finally I came to “The House of M. Mohamed Ennifar”— it was really a booth, like all the other shops in the souk; it was about eight feet square. I went in to see this celebrated “Distributor of Genuine Tunisian Perfume Extracts.” I wished to talk with the gentleman who publicly admitted in the newspapers that he was an “Expert in all Perfumes, Amber Pastilles and Incense. Amber Antiques. Roses of the Desert. Lilacs from Nubia. Jasmin from Sfax.”

I had seen his advertisement and felt that I must call upon him. Though I was somewhat hesitant about going into the presence of a man who vaunted such knowledge. He received me graciously, rising from the cushion upon which he sat and bowing to me as I entered. He seated me upon a divan. He served me coffee that was thick and black and sweet smelling. And always he talked of perfume, not infrequently reminding me that the Prophet himself loved not only beautiful women but the odor of perfumes as well. Of attar of roses, perhaps. Of mimosa. White jasmine. Narcissus. The perfume of sandalwood. Cedarwood. And ambergris.

For a long time he talked and the perfume of his talk was like the perfume of his flowers. When finally he knew I was roused by his talk and by his perfumes, the Arab with the white beard opened a bottle and drew the long glass stopper through the air. The old rogue was so successful in capturing me with his beautiful talk, even though a good part of it was obviously a retelling of the tales of Scheherazade, that I bought bottles and bottles of his perfume. They were expensive, those perfumes; but, after all, money is not to be considered when one can buy both the morning breath of the flowers and the fabulous talk of a white bearded Arab telling of incense and amber. I left the Street of the Perfumers and came to the Souk-el-Leffa where are shops offering Tunisian silks. Bedspreads from Gafsa. Rugs from Persia. Silks from China. Brass from India."

----In exceptional circumstances, it is possible for a sealed bottle to leak during air transportation. This leak is caused by the difference in air pressure in the airplane cabin during the flight. I pack my bottles very carefully, providing additional protection to stoppers and bottlenecks and as a precaution cover labels with plastic and tape. However, if spilled perfume may still cause damage to a label - or something else - I cannot be held responsible for this.

REGARDING FRAGRANCES:

About vintage and discontinued perfumes: If you are searching for that long lost or discontinued perfume of your memory...old perfumes do deteriorate with age.

Perfumes over 3-10 years start to lose their freshness and may start to smell like alcohol. Certain ingredients and compounds will break down and "turn" faster than others. The older the perfume, the less it may smell like what you may remember.

Let's examine the DNA of a vintage perfume and how it ages.

The top notes of the perfume, the notes you first smell usually deteriorate the fastest. Some of these are:

-----Citrus scents such as bergamot, tangerine, yuzu, neroli, grapefruit, lemongrass, verbena, citron, petitgrain, orange, lemon and lime.

------Synthetic chemicals such as aldehydes, ozone and aquatic (marine) notes

------Fresh, delicate florals like lily of the valley, iris, orchid, violet, osmanthus, and , cyclamen, freesia, lilac, wisteria, peony, narcissus.

------Fruits: raspberry, litchi, strawberry, apple, passion fruit, mango, pineapple, pear, peach, guava, apricot, watermelon, coconut

However, after the top notes wear off, the middle and base notes are often still fragrant and good smelling. Examples of heart/middle notes:

-------Dark fruits such as raisins, plums, cherry, prunes, blackcurrant, fig, mulberry.

Heavier and more pungent floral scent such as rose, jasmine, orange blossom, carnation, geranium, ylang ylang, frangipani, heliotrope, tuberose and gardenia often fare better than their lighter counterparts found in the top notes. Also vegetables and herbs such as celery, carrot, lavender, sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, mint, basil, angelica

Base notes often remain in the best condition. These were used as fixatives to make a perfume last longer and have the best shelf life.

--------Precious woods: sandalwood, macassar, oud, cedarwood, palisander, rosewood, cypress

--------Plants, roots and grasses: tobacco, orris, vetiver, oakmoss, patchouli, violet leaves, juniper, heather, wormwood, anise, caraway, ginger, pepper,

--------Spices: cinnamon, cloves, coriander, cardamom, cumin

--------Resins and balsams: frankincense, myrrh, opoponax, olibanum, and copal, styrax, galbanum, tolu, Peru, cistus labdanum, vanilla, tonka, benzoin.

--------Animalics such as leather, civet, ambergris, musk and castoreum.

If you are looking to buy fresh smelling perfume, please don't buy vintage or antique as in most cases the scent will have changed!

How a fragrance was stored will affect how it smells today. If the fragrance was stored in a cool, dark place, it should have fared well. But, since many people who sell perfumes today, such as myself, we often get perfumes second-hand - through auctions, estate sales, yard sales, thrift shops, friends and family or other venues. I cannot vouch for how a perfume was stored before it came into our hands, so buyer beware. I try to tell my buyers if a perfume has soured top notes, etc right in the listing.

Due to the delicate nature of perfume, I am sorry but I cannot offer refunds for ANY perfume, especially vintage, antique or discontinued perfumes.

PERFUME REFORMULATIONS

Please take into account that perfumes often go through reformulations over the years due to rising perfume ingredient costs or regulations (such as IFRA) on allergens or chemical toxicities, and may not smell exactly the same as what you remember. These reformulations are not always disclosed to the public and I may have no way of knowing whether a perfume has been reformulated or not. Packaging and bottle changes are often clues that there has been a reformulation, but not always.

OTHER ISSUES:

I am a non-smoker but I often buy all of my perfumes at estate sales, auctions, yard sales, thrift shops, etc, so they are used, I do try to clean the bottles as best as I can if they smell like tobacco smoke. I try to wipe down all perfume bottles before shipping so your bottle will be clean and shiny. Also, I foster kittens from a local animal shelter and do have three adult cats in my home. The occasional stray cat hair might find it's way into a package once in awhile.

Please contact me immediately if your shipping address is different than the one posted on Etsy. In the event that you do not provide a correct shipping address and your package gets returned to me, you will need to pay for shipping again in order for it to be shipped again. PERFUMES

About vintage and discontinued perfumes: If you are searching for that long lost or discontinued perfume of your memory such as Styx by Coty. Please remember that perfumes over 3-10 years start to lose their freshness and may start to smell like alcohol. The older the perfume, the less it may smell like what you may remember. If you are looking to buy fresh smelling perfume, don't buy vintage or antique!

I sell antique and vintage perfume bottles that may or may not contain perfume. Because of their age and have been previously owned (sometimes I can’t determine if the contents of a sealed bottles are original because I do not open sealed bottles), I offer NO guarantee on the content or (absence of) smell or originality of the perfume. This is most certainly also the case for perfume bottles which are sealed! When you ascertain abnormal smell, absence or change of a scent, I will in every case not take back the perfume bottle or make a refund.

Many of the pictures in my listings are taken indoors with a light tent with artificial lighting. Therefore colors may appear different than in real life. Please note that colors may appear differently on different computer monitors and is unavoidable. In any event, I do my best to display true color on every photograph

PERFUME SAMPLES

I am cleaning out my sample boxes and selling many of my vintage, hard to find and discontinued perfume samples. Most of these are manufacturer's samples and may have the words "Not for Sale" on the card as these were promotional items from the manufacturer at the time of release and were not intended to be sold by the original retailers. However, I have purchased all of these second hand items over the years to do reviews on them for my website. Now it is time for someone else to enjoy them. All samples have been tested at least once in order for me to complete a review on them.

Samples are intended to give you an idea of the fragrance before you purchase a large bottle.

There are absolutely no refunds or exchanges on perfume samples or miniature perfume bottles.

FRAGRANCE MINIATURES:

Miniature perfumes are generally under 3" tall. Micro minis are under 1" in height. All fragrance miniature bottles (mini perfumes/colognes) on my site are being sold as collectibles only. Fragrance miniatures were often sold along with larger bottles by the manufacturers as gift with purchases and may have the words "Gift Not For Resale" on them. Please understand that I do not test any of these and do not sell them for the fragrances contained in their bottles as these are old and most of the time they have turned and are no longer wearable. There will be no returns accepted on these items.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's The Difference Between Perfume & Cologne?

Parfum: (Extrait) is the highest concentration of perfume and may contain 20-30% essential oils and high grade alcohol & a slight amount of water, can last 7 to 24 hours on the skin. Parfum is the most expensive type of fragrance.
Eau de Parfum: (Esprit de Parfum/Parfum de Toilette) is composed of 10-15% of essential oils with a slightly weaker alcohol & water mix, usually last about 4-8 hours.
Eau de Toilette: is a much thinner dilution of the same materials, containing approximately only 4-10% of essential oils, in an even weaker alcohol & water mixture. Usually last about 3 hours.
Eau de Cologne: for men or women, is further diluted, about 3-5% of essential oils, in an even still weaker alcohol & water mix. Usually lasts about 2 hours.

Reformulations Can Also Affect How A Perfume Smells

Please take into account that perfumes often go through reformulations over the years due to rising perfume ingredient costs or regulations (such as IFRA) on allergens or chemical toxicities, and may not smell exactly the same as what you remember.

These reformulations are not always disclosed to the public and I may have no way of knowing whether a perfume has been reformulated or not. Packaging and bottle changes are often clues that there has been a reformulation, but not always. Due to the delicate nature of perfume, I am sorry but I cannot offer refunds for any perfume, especially vintage, antique or discontinued perfumes.

Fragrances Can Change Character Over Time

Please remember that perfumes over 3-10 years start to lose their freshness and may start to smell like alcohol. Certain ingredients and compounds will break down and oxidize. The older the perfume, the less it may smell like what you may remember. How a fragrance was stored will affect how it smells today. If the fragrance was stored in a cool, dark place, it should have fared well. But, since I often get perfumes second-hand, mostly through estate sales, I cannot vouch for how a perfume was stored before it came into my hands, so buyer beware.

Due to the delicate nature of perfume, I am sorry but I cannot offer refunds for any perfume, especially vintage, antique or discontinued perfumes.

Because of their age and the fact that these have been previously owned (sometimes I can’t determine if the contents of a sealed bottles are original because I do not open sealed bottles), I can offer NO guarantee on the content or (absence of) smell or originality of the perfume.

A Quick Note About Mini Perfumes

Miniature perfumes are generally under 3" tall. Micro minis are under 1" in height. All fragrance miniature bottles (mini perfumes/colognes) on my site are being sold as collectibles only. Fragrance miniatures were often sold along with larger bottles by the manufacturers as gift with purchases & may have the words "Gift Not For Resale" on them. All the miniature fragrances I have in my shop are from my personal collection, some were purchased new & some were purchased second hand & therefore may have been used. Please understand that I do not test any of these when listing & do not sell them for the fragrances contained in their bottles as these are old & most of the time they have turned and are no longer wearable.

A Quick Note About Perfume Samples

Over the years, I collected thousands of genuine vintage, hard to find & discontinued manufacturer's perfume & cologne samples, but I have to let some go now. These fragrances are old, & are most likely not fresh as they once were & their scent most likely has changed over time, please understand that I cannot guarantee that the fragrance still smells good to you. If a sample is carded, it may show signs of wear & tear from storage. Many of these samples are discontinued fragrances that are no longer produced & are considered collectibles. Please understand that I do not test any of these when listing & do not sell them for the fragrances contained in their vials as these are old & most of the time they have turned & are no longer wearable.

Are any duties, taxes or VAT included in my purchase?

No. For my international buyers - Buyers are responsible for additional costs caused by import/shipping that is levied by the various authorities in their own country. Import duties, VAT and other possible (tax) charges fall outside the responsibility of me and are the responsibility of the buyer. The buyer is personally responsible to inform themselves in advance of the charges levied in the country where the package is to be dispatched at the request of the buyer. Regarding the transport insurance the actual value of the content of the package is specified to the shipping company. By the laws of your country, you are still responsible to pay these. I, or Etsy, cannot illegally mark an item as "gift" to help you avoid these taxes.

Help! Tracking says my order was delivered but I don't have it!

If you are international, check with your local post office. Depending upon your country, it might be waiting at the post office for you to pay your VAT or IMPORT taxes before you can receive the package. If it's not there, ask anyone that lives with you and/or your neighbors.

If you are USA domestic, first check with anyone that lives with you that might have picked it up for you. You can ask neighbors as well. If no one has seen it, contact your local post office.

Once a package is tracked as delivered, the post office will no longer discuss the package with the sender. I am not responsible for a package once it has been delivered, including theft.

Layaway

We offer a free 60 day term flexible layaway plan with a 25% non refundable deposit for purchases over $150.

A longer term might be available on request depending on the purchase price.

If you would like to avail of our layaway plan simply contact with details of the item. We will send you a customized link to pay the deposit. Once the deposit is paid we will reserve the item for you for 60 days. When you are ready to pay another installment let us know and we will send you another link to pay. You can schedule payments at your own convenience until the item is paid off.

I'm an international buyer, what do I need to know?

International shipping can take up to 6 weeks.

Please be aware that you will be responsible for any taxes, custom fees, handling fees, or other amounts levied by your home country. Please check with your Customs office and/or Postal Service if you are concerned about possible tariffs. I do not know every country’s fees so it is your responsibility to be aware of these before purchasing. VAT is NOT INCLUDED in the listing price. If your country's revenue authority collects VAT, GST, or any other tax/fee, you will have to pay the fee on delivery according to your country's regulations.

If your item shows it was delivered but you have not received it, it is likely being held at your local post office/customs office awaiting payment of fees.
